International Travel Security Update: Tunisia Terror Attack

Sousse, Tunisia – On June 26th, 2015 a gunman attacked the Hotel Imperial Marhaba, a popular tourist destination on the Tunisian coast. The gunman, Saif Al-Deen Al Rezgui, killed 38 people and wounded almost 40 others before being shot and killed by police. Although the Tunisia terror attack seems to have been perpetrated by a lone gunman, the radical Islamic group ISIS claimed responsibility.

Tunisia Terror AttackSousse is a seaside town and a popular tourist destination that attracts many European tourists. In fact, most of the victims of the Tunisia terror attack were from Germany, France, and the UK. In the wake of this gruesome act, throngs of European tourists fled the country and many fear that these attacks could cause long term damage to the country’s travel and tourism industry.

International Travel Security in the Arab World

Unfortunately, the recent Tunisia terror attack was not an isolated event. Another incident took place in March when two gunmen attacked a museum in Tunisia that killed 22 foreign tourists. Furthermore, the Tunisia terror attack was one of a series of terrorist acts that took place in June. ISIS also claimed responsibility for the bombing of a Shiite mosque in Kuwait, and ISIS flags were found at the scene of a beheading near Lyon, France.

Politically, Tunisia has emerged from the Arab Spring better than many other states in the region, particularly Libya, Yemen, and Syria. However, the two attacks this year demonstrate that the country still suffers from serious security issues. Yet, Tunisia is not alone. Most countries in the Middle East and North Africa are grappling with a compromised security environment. As such, the international travel security experts at IMG urge extreme caution to travelers and tourists planning to visit the area in the near future.
